The plague took us by surprise

Issue Date: Oct 31, 1994
The plague had been virtually non-existent in India for the past 2 decades. What was the cause of the recent outbreak? One thing should be clear: the plague bacilli were always present in various parts of the country among rodents. Whenever there are ecological imbalances, the plague bacilli will create havoc. But we were quite surprised by the suddenness of this outbreak. Interviewee:  Ashish Kumar Mu...

'Privatisation can be a major threat to medical research'

Issue Date: Oct 15, 1994
Would you agree that in recent years researchers have become more communicative? You're quite right. In the past 10 years, the scene has changed. Scientific institutions have been teaching scientists the techniques of public relations, publishing and writing for science journals and holding press conferences. These days, we even have an M Sc programme in science communication. Have hospitals also adapted themselves to this open door policy? Interviewee:  Robin Fox

'We must teach science in a more hands-on manner'

Issue Date: Sep 30, 1994
How did you become interested in the development of low-cost laboratory equipment for universities? Over the last 20 to 30 years, there has been a growing emphasis in both the fields of research and industry on the use of sophisticated instrumentation. Yet there has been hardly any progress in teaching laboratories. In my own university laboratories, students at the B Sc and M Sc levels today are using the same instruments that I did 40 years ago. Interviewee:  K V Sane

Issue Date: Sep 15, 1994
What led the HMS to join the environmental battle? We were aware of the growing environmental awareness in the industrial sector through our occupational health and safety programmes. We realised that workers' safety goes beyond the workplace and is closely connected with the environment. Interviewee:  Arun Kumar Daur

Crocodiles lend themselves very naturally to captive breeding

Issue Date: Aug 31, 1994
When and why did you begin breeding crocodiles? Serious efforts at breeding crocodiles started at the Madras Crocodile Bank in 1975-76. Being a herpetologist (a person who studies reptiles) in those days meant that you stopped thinking about esoteric studies and started thinking about what you can do for an endangered species. Interviewee:  Romulus Whitaker

We want to ensure an NGO in every village

Issue Date: Aug 15, 1994
What did you achieve by undertaking the fast at Alandi? This is not the first time I have undertaken a fast to draw the attention of the government to the rampant corruption in the social forestry department. I had undertaken a similar fast in 1990. At that time, the government had given verbal assurances that the matter would be inquired into. As nothing came out of this, I decided to undertake another fast. This time written assurances were given that action would be taken against the offending officials within 15 days. Interviewee:  Anna Hazare

What rural folk need is motivation

Author(s): S Rajendran
Issue Date: Jul 31, 1994
What is the basic concept of pani panchayats? Pani panchayats are arrangements between the farmers of a village to share water resources. There is a limit on the amount of land that can be irrigated -- 0.2 ha for an individual and 1 ha for a family. The beneficiaries should chip in 20 per cent of the capital cost. We provide the remainder as an interest free loan. The farmers are encouraged to manage and operate the scheme. Interviewee:  V B Salunke

'It is difficult to sustain a one-point literacy programme'

Author(s): Rustam Vania
Issue Date: Jul 15, 1994
What is the origin of the Pondicherry Science Forum? Inspired by the experiences of the Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishat, we set up PSF in December 1985 for the popularisation of science. We organised quiz contests and various programmes for schoolchildren. We used folk art and culture to discuss a number of development issues. And in 1988 we held a children's festival. When did literacy become a part of your programme? Interviewee:  Shastra Sahitya...
