Activists Akhil Gogoi and Ramesh Agrawal attacked

Two activists, one leading an anti-dam stir and the other land grab by industrial houses, were attacked in separate incidents. Akhil Gogoi was attacked with sticks and sharp weapons in Assam while Ramesh Agrawal was shot at in Chhattisgarh.

Subansiri dam protests: Akhil Gogoi goes on indefinite fast

Activist Akhil Gogoi went on an indefinite hunger-strike starting Sunday in Guwahati,. He was demanding the release of 27 anti-dam protesters, arrested from Ghaghar Village in Lakhimpur district on May 11. They were planning to stop construction machinery from being transported to National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project site near the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh border, say officials. Gogoi accused the state police and the central reserve police of “unleashing inhuman atrocities on our peaceful and democratic protesters”.

Subansiri dam protests: blockade of Arunachal Pradesh continues

Protests in different parts of Assam against the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh entered its sixth day on Wednesday even as the Assam power minister said a group of ministers would be meeting the agitators on January 5 for talks. The protesters have blocked national highway-52 near North Lakhimpur on the Assam-Arunachal border indefinitely.
