It is wetter in the south

over the past 22 years, ocean warming has caused an eight per cent increase in rainfall over the Southern Ocean and the South Pacific. Annie Wong, oceanographer at the Antarctic Cooperative Research Centre ( acrc ) in Hobart, Australia, says that warmer ocean temperatures are intensifying the cycle of rainfall, introducing greater volumes of freshwater to the sub-polar regions.
Waiting for rain

The National Weather Service has blamed the stagnant high-pressure system over the south-eastern part of the country for the lack of rain this summer. Although officials at the Indian Meteorological Department ( imd ) dismiss the prevailing conditions as "not a very serious matter", the heat has already forced people to stay indoors during the day.

IN RECENT years, ecology has emerged as a major research topic and its historical aspect is being keenly analysed. The period between the 17th century to the early 20th century, when most of the nations were under colonial rule, is associated with the exploitation of natural resources. India is no exception. The Indian Forest Act of 1927, in operation till 1980, was extremely exploitative in nature. The 1927 Act was an extension of the 1878 Act, both constituted during the British rule.
BANGLADESH COLD WAVE

Bangladesh experienced its worst ever cold wave that killed at least 220 people in the western and northern districts. Biman Bangaladesh, the national airline, cancelled many of its domestic and international flights due to heavy fogs blanketing the affected regions. Authorities distributed blankets to the victims to protect them against the 7C and the 8 kmph winds.
