CAG blames Centre for increase in foodgrain procurement cost

Exactly five years after the employment guarantee programme's pan-India roll out, the programme seems to have lost favour with the rural poor. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) office submitted its latest audit report on the programme to Parliament on April 23. The audit shows around 20 per cent decline in employment generation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the last two years.

SC questions coal ministry’s power to allocate coal blocks

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Union Ministry of Coal, questioning the legality of coal block allocation to companies. Justice R M Lodha and Justice J Chelameswar issued the notice on the public interest petition, seeking probe by a special investigating team into alleged irregularities in coal block allocations. The petition was filed last year by NGO Common Cause and other eminent citizens, including former cabinet secretary T S R Subramanian, former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami and others.

Only 22 housing projects for poor completed under JNNURM, says CAG

The recent claim of housing and poverty alleviation ministry that housing shortage has become less acute in India is belied by the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report tabled in the Parliament on Thursday. It said that only 22 of the 1,517 housing projects for poor people under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) have been completed by due date. CAG stated that the ministry was not well equipped to monitor the progress of JNNURM due to the scale and magnitude of the mission.

CAG finds lapses in dental education

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has criticised the Union health ministry for allowing 13 new dental colleges to start functioning despite the statutory body for dental education recommending against it. Dental Council of India (DCI), the statutory body, had rejected licences of 13 new dental colleges after conducting inspections across the country. These colleges did not have enough medical, dental and paramedical staff and lacked infrastructure like college buildings, libraries, hospitals and clinical equipment like dental chairs.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has pulled up the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for not formulating safety standards for mobile phone handsets and their batteries or prescribing the limit for electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and towers. The report was submitted to Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on August 30.
