Clinical drug trials: registration of contract research organisations put on hold

Even as the Supreme Court has slammed the government for allowing unethical drug trials in the country, the Centre seems to be dragging its feet over regulating them. A panel set up by the government to look into the matter has deferred the decision to register contract research organisations (CROs) that help pharmaceutical companies conduct clinical drug trials with the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

The Supreme Court of India has come down heavily on the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government for their non-serious attitude in checking of unethical drug trials being conducted by pharma companies in the country.  The bench headed by justice R M Lodha pulled up the Central and the Madhya Pradesh government for not filing their responses with the court in the given time. The bench said it is unfortunate that humans are being treated as guinea pigs and asked the two governments take the matter seriously. The court has given them eight more weeks to file their responses.

Drug trials in India killed 2,031 persons

As many as 2,031 people in India have died because of the clinical drug trials they were subjected to in the past four years. Only 22 of them have been compensated. What's more, no action has been taken so far against any pharma company, ethics committee that oversees clinical trials or contract research organisation that conducts the trials, which have been found guilty of unethical practices. The information became public during the hearing of a Right To Information (RTI) petition by the Central Information Commission on June 29.

Ranbaxy launches new anti-malarial drug

The Indian drug manufacturing company Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited launched a new anti-malarial drug, Synriam on the occasion of World Malaria Day on April 25. The drug, a combination of arterolane maleate 150 mg and piperaquine phosphate 750 mg, is now available in the market. An adult suffering from malaria will need only one tablet a day for three days. In case of other malaria medicines two to four tablets are required, twice daily for three or more days. The new drug regime will lead to better compliance, says Ranbaxy.

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government in connection with clinical drug trials being conducted across India. This follows a public interest petition filed by an Indore based non-profit, seeking the court's intervention to put a stop to unethical clinical trials. Reports of unethical trials conducted on children and mentally challenged patients in Madhya Pradesh surfaced recently in various media reports. The petition filed by Swasthya Adhikar Manch was admitted by the court on February 6.
