Joint committee favours endosulfan exports

AFTER imposing a ban on endosulfan, the Supreme Court is now examining the possibility of allowing export of the pesticide. On August 5, the court-appointed joint committee was given a three-week deadline to submit an interim report on the possibility of exporting and disposing of the endosulfan stocks with the manufacturers.

Pesticide makers resort to scare tactics

Excel Crop Care, the biggest endosulfan manufacturer in the country, has sent legal notices to three doctors— Jayakrishnan T, Prabhakumari C and Thomas Bina—of the department of community medicine of the Calicut Medical college (CMC) in Kozhikode for their report on endosulfan.

The Supreme Court on August 5 gave a three week extension to the Joint Committee to submit its interim report on the possibility of exports or disposal off the existing stocks of endosulfan. The interim ban imposed on May 13 on the manufacture, use, sale and export of endosulfan will, however, continue. The joint committee comprising Director General Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Agriculture Commissioner was formed the same day to prepare a report on the harmful effects of endosulfan.

SC extends endosulfan ban

THE Supreme Court has turned down the request of pesticide manufacturers to allow them to export the pesticide stocks in India. The court had banned the sale, manufacture, use and export of the pesticide on May 13 on a petition by the youth wing of the CPI(M), the Democratic Youth Federation of India. While ordering the interim ban, the court had appointed a joint committee to report on the health and environmental impacts of endosulfan. The committee, headed by the director general of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), missed the July 15 deadline for submitting the report.

Scientists get legal notice for highlighting health hazards of endosulfan

S Ganesan on behalf of Excel Crop Care, the biggest endosulfan manufacturer in the country, has sent a legal notice to the Government Medical college, Calicut for their report on endosulfan. The report indicted endosulfan for the health problems of those living in the cashew plantations in Kasaragod district of Kerala.

Endosulfan ban to continue

The Supreme Court appointed joint committee failed to submit its interim report on endosulfan on July 15 and asked for eight-week extension. On the other hand, the Pesticide Manufacturers and Formulators Association of India (PMFAI), one of the respondents in the case, pleaded with the court to give immediate relief to them and allow export of pesticides, the stocks for which are already lying with the manufacturers. 

India supports Asbestos for PIC list

In a turn of events, on June 22,  India agreed to the listing of chrysotile asbestos in Annex III of the Rotterdam Convention or the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) list. PIC list increases transparency between trading countries by letting the importer know that it is importing hazardous substance. India announced its position, on day 3, at a contact group meeting set up to discuss chrysotile asbestos (white asbestos) in the absence of a consensus. India received a standing ovation at the plenary for changing its stand.
