I had just finished a presentation to a gathering of Venetian academics on the time-tested water storage systems of Rajasthan. During refreshments, while some wondered at what went into making such elaborate water systems, I asked: how was water managed before pipelines came to Venice about a 100 years ago? A long-standing dispute over losses faced by Malaysian fisherfolk due to land reclamation activities by Singapore near the international waterway dividing the two nations has ended. In a deal struck on April 26, 2005, Singapore agreed to pay us$98,410 to Malaysia as compensation for the fisherfolk; the compensation for each individual has been fixed at us$1,369.

We did our bit

On December 26, 2004, when the tsunami struck, the hospital's paediatric ward was swept away; there were no survivors. This hospital was our first call as volunteers in relief operations coordinated by the Chennai-based non-governmental organisation, Suyam: we were greeted by a thick muck carpet. It was January 2, 2005.
