Rising mercury has taken its toll not just in the plains but also in the Himalayan mountains. A longer-than-usual summer and absence of moisture led to proliferation of forest fires. A common sight across Himachal Pradesh this summer was forests, especially chir pine forests in the lower and middle Himalayas, covered with uncontrollable flames by night and smoke by day.

Large swathes of forests in Maharashtra risk being destroyed by forest fires allegedly started by tendu contractors. Large forest areas have been gutted in fires at different places in Vidarbha over the past fortnight. Sources in the forest department say these are not natural forest fires, a frequent phenomenon during summer. The tussle between state forest department and tendu leaf contractors is said to be the root cause of the forest fires.

Maharashtra forest department backtracks on forest fire guidelines

Within days of declaring that the auction of tendu units will be cancelled in case of forest fires, the Maharashtra state forest department has decided to relax the rules. The move came after angry tendu contractors boycotted the auctions of the units. At the auctions held at the department’s office in Nagpur on January 30 not a single tender was received. 

Maharashtra forest department bans collection of tendu leaves from areas prone to forest fires

Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to ban collection and sale of tendu leaves in areas where forest fires occur. The state forest department’s latest tender notice for tendu collection contracts issued on January 17 features a clause that tendu contractors and gram panchayats will be responsible for preventing and extinguishing of fires in tendu units (areas where tendu grows) from January 15 to June 15 every year.
