Centre for incinerating toxic Bhopal waste in Navi Mumbai

After losing battle to environmentalists against incineration of toxic waste from Union Carbide factory in Bhopal at Nagpur, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has now turned its attention to Navi Mumbai. It has written to Mumbai Waste Management Limited, a waste management company, to incinerate the waste lying in the factory since past 26 years there.

No trial incineration of Bhopal’s toxic waste in Nagpur

In a temporary relief to Nagpur residents, the Jabalpur bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has turned down the Centre’s plea for a trial run of burning toxic waste from the defunct Union Carbide factory at the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) incineration facility in the city. The waste has been lying in the plant premises in Bhopal for the past 27 years. Maharashtra has been resisting Madhya Pradesh’s attempt to dispose of the waste in Nagpur.  

Nagpur bench stays transfer of Bhopal's toxic waste

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered a stay on the possible transfer of the toxic waste lying in the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal to the incineration facility maintained by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) near Nagpur. The transfer of about 350 tonnes of hazardous waste from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh to Nagpur in Maharashtra has become a contentious matter between the two states; both the Nagpur bench and the Jabalpur bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court are simultaneously hearing petitions relating to disposing of the waste.  

Environment ministry, CPCB endorse burning Bhopal's toxic waste at Nagpur

In a surprise move, the Union environment ministry and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have supported disposing of Bhopal's toxic waste at the Nagpur waste facility maintained by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In its report submitted to the Jabalpur bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court on November 22, CPCB said the DRDO facility near Borkhedi in Nagpur district is capable of incinerating the waste from the now defunct Union Carbide plant, and asked the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to cooperate.

Court rejects Lavasa's plea to intervene in criminal case

While Lavasa Corporation Limited (LCL) got a major relief from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), which has granted environmental clearance to the first phase of the hill city project, it faced a setback in the sessions court, which is hearing a criminal complaint against the company. The court rejected an application by LCL to intervene in the case on November 9.
