MoEF extends deadline for states to declare eco-sensitive zones around wildlife parks and sanctuaries

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has extended the deadline for the states to declare eco-sensitive zones  around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries by three more months. The previous deadline expired on February 15.

Forest panel clears Jindal's mining projects in Saranda forest

The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) of the Union environment ministry has recommended clearing over 1,500 ha of forest for mining in an elephant reserve in Jharkhand. In its meeting on January 21-22, the committee that advises the ministry on forestland diversion, cleared two proposals by Jindal group of companies, JSW Steel and Jindal Power and Steel, for mining iron and manganese ore in the Saranda forest division. The forest is part of Singhbhum elephant reserve in West Singhbhum district and is considered one of the finest elephant habitats.

MoEF opposes CEC’s recommendation on eco-sensitive zones

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has opposed the recommendation of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on the mechanism for notifying eco-sensitive zones around wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, saying the advisory body to the Supreme Court wants to reduce the size of the zones.

Legal protection for wildlife corridors, soon: Jayanthi Natarajan

The Union minister of state for environment and forests, Jayanthi Natarajan has announced that the Wildlife Protection Act will be amended for this purpose. She was speaking at the sixth meeting of the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) on September 6.

Environment ministry approves mining near Vaishno Devi shrine

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given its conditional approval to a mining project near the famous Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu. It has also agreed to de-notify a wildlife sanctuary near the temple to allow expansion of facilities for visiting pilgrims.
