Experts call for holistic approach to reproductive healthcare

In a recently held consultation in Delhi on maternal and reproductive health, experts called for key shift in policy for healthcare of women. They said policy planners should look at women's health with a wide angle lens, include sexual health within the ambit of reproductive health, and make access to reproductive health services universal and free. They also stressed on the need for a holistic approach on women's health.

Push to include access to energy in UN development goals

To push for the inclusion of energy access as one of the goals in the next Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), financial institutions and non-governmental organisations held a consultation on the sidelines of the ongoing Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) in New Delhi. The current MDGs are expiring in 2015 and will be renamed as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Energy access is not a part of the current MDGs. The three day DSDS ends today.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, came to an end last week. The conference declaration, titled “The Future We Want”, is a weak and meaningless document. Putting the world on a viable sustainable development track has never been easy. The three-day UN summit on sustainable development at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil begins on June 20. An assembly of world leaders is expected to put its stamp on a global vision for the future, but the challenge of the conference is ensuring clearly stated outcomes.

India along with other developing countries managed to gain an upper hand in the negotiations to decide the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development here in Rio de Janeiro. The conference, popularly referred to as Rio+20, begins in this coastal city on June 20. It commemorates 20 years of the Earth Summit held here in 1992, where close to 100 world leaders came together to pledge their will to arrest environmental degradation and take the path of sustainable development.
