High court stays land acquisition for Kovvada nuclear power plant

In an interim order, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the state government not to issue any notification for acquiring land for setting up a nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Ranasthalam block of Srikakulam district. The interim stay was issued on March 11 in response to a public interest petition filed against a government order notifying the villages that would be affected by the project.

MoEF extends deadline for states to declare eco-sensitive zones around wildlife parks and sanctuaries

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has extended the deadline for the states to declare eco-sensitive zones  around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries by three more months. The previous deadline expired on February 15.

Wetlands and lakes will now be protected under single new conservation programme

On February 7 it approved the merging of the National Lake Conservation Plan and the National Wetlands Conservation Programme. These two centrally sponsored schemes are currently being implemented by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

The MoU was signed between the government and Jindal South West Holdings Limited (JSWHL) and the Emirate of Ras al Khaimah (ANRAK).

The Union Cabinet has cleared way for setting up of National Investment Board (NIB). It has been renamed as Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) and will be chaired by prime minister and comprise members from various ministries. “The Cabinet has given an in-principle approval to the committee on December 13. It will take a week’s time to decide on its members and function. We will put up the details on our website by next week,” says K L Sharma, joint secretary in the Cabinet secretariat.
