Kaziranga’s no-development zone has 90 factories

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered all industries that have sprung up in the no development zone near Kaziranga National Park after the zone was notified in 1996 to shut down. It has also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh each on the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the Assam government for allowing the industries to operate in the restricted zone.

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to make public all forest clearances given to projects within a week of grant of such clearances. The order was given in connection with an appeal challenging the clearance to the Demwe Lower Hydro Electric Project on the Lohit river in Arunachal Pradesh. The forest clearance granted to the mega hydel project was not made public, allegedly to thwart legal action.

Hazaribagh villages up against Reliance Power

On May 22, some 20 villages in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand called a maha-panchayat and resolved not to let Reliance Power mine coal from Kerendari B and C blocks for its 4,000 MW power plant being set up at Barhi village. The maha-panchayat was convened a week after the police lathi-charged people who would be affected by the mining project and arrested 200 of them during a public hearing. The residents were peacefully protesting against the hearing organised in Hazaribagh town, 44 km from Kerendari village which will fully displaced by the project.
