Bengaluru water utility to launch door-to-door drive to check illegal borewells

In a bid to check unauthorised drilling of borewells in Bengaluru city, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is planning to launch an initiative to identify unregistered borewells by visiting individual houses. 

Cauvery row: SC directs Karnataka to release 283 cumec water to Tamil Nadu

The Supreme Court has directed Karnataka state government to release 283 cubic metre per second (cumec) of water every day to Tamil Nadu. Hearing the Cauvery row on December 5, the court also asked the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to meet within two days and decide water sharing between the two states.

The river of woes for Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha and her Karnataka counterpart S M Krishna, not a single day has passed in the last six months when both haven't worried over their rights. For the states, it is an intense three-decade old battle.

Bengaluru lakes to get facelift

Bengaluru now has an actionplan to restore its waterbodies after the Karnataka High Court accepted the report of a committee appointed to prepare a framework for the preservation of the city's lakes. The court had appointed the committee headed by Justice NK Patil in November last year to examine the ground realities while formulating a framework for restoration of lakes.

though the verdict on the Cauvery water dispute was pronounced on February 5, 2007, it has failed to reach a lasting consensus. The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (cwdt) took 16 years to come up with the final plan for sharing of Cauvery water between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
