Assam party demands environmental assessment
Assam’s opposition political party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has demanded suspension of work on all mega hydel power projects in Arunachal Pradesh till they are assessed for their environmental and community impact in downstream areas. The demand followed consultations organized by the party in Guwahati on January 23 and 24.
The seminar was attended by politicians, social activists and academics, including Amarjyoti Choudhury, former vice-chancellor of Guwahati University. Choudhury described the hydro-power projects as attacks on indigenous communities whose lives are intertwined with the rivers.
AGP also demanded scrapping of the Lower Subansiri hydel project under-way in Arunachal Pradesh.
AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said the Ranganadi hydel project of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation in Assam was an eye-opener (NEEPCO) —people living downstream are affected by flooding whenever excess water is released from the dam. Party members demanded adequate compensation for the affected people.
