Photo: Sancho MccannThe US telecom regulator has fined Google $25,000 for stalling a probe into its Street View online mapping service. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) announced the penalty, saying it was dropping the investigation into whether Street View cars gathered data from private wireless networks. FCC contended that Google delayed the probe by ignoring requests for internal information like emails related to Street View data collection and names of employees who authorised or reviewed it. Google spokesperson said the technology giant, however, cooperated with the inquiry.
FCC began the probe in late 2010 after Google announced that Street View cars taking photographs of cities in over 30 countries had inadvertently gathered data sent over unsecured Wi-Fi. Information sucked up by the cars included passwords, emails and other data, FCC said. Google has since stopped using Street View cars for its mapping service.
