The Planning Commission has rejected the poverty estimate made on the basis of the latest consumption expenditure survey by the National Sample Survey Office. The survey done in 2009-10 reveals a wide gap in the expenditures of the rural and urban residents. This implies high inequality. What’s more, people in villages now spend a larger share of their income on food and other necessities as compared to those in towns and cities

It is the fact that there exist great divide (DTE 30th April 2012)between the Rural and Urban. As brought in the earlier issue of DTE, the poverty estimates announced by the Planning Commission were not acceptable an d further rejected. It is the welcome step and need to look for better estimate tool. The new tool should be designed to include 12 items as done by the NSSO. Hope, the planner can understand the reality at grassroots and make better efforts for getting better poverty estimates. Let look forward for better PRA tools for resolving this issue with better accountability and transparency both at planning and implementation including monitoring an evaluation. Certainly these estimate will help to reach the targeted people for the effective identification as well as the utilization of Government Supports / schemes and further for better living with quality of life.
