THE birth of little Nargis in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow district on October 31 was preceded by diverse reactions worldwide.
People in NGOs, think tanks, media and government bodies racked their brains to know what the world’s seventh billion resident portends. There seems an underlying guilt in such soul searching: a sense of collective failure at putting the world's resources at peril.
This website is another such attempt. It helps anyone who is willing to put in a few details like date and country of birth to strike kinship with the little girl. But such virtual moments of poignancy cloud something fundamental: we are not one in this peril, some are more culpable than others. And some are far more equipped to handle the peril than others. Going by media reports, little Nargis is among the less fortunate.
