Letter>> Oxford University • the UK
Photo: Eugene BirchallIt is something unprecedented in the five decade history of the Oxford University. A 19-year-old has sent a mocking rejection letter to the University after an interview for a spot there. Elly Nowell, who had been interviewed to study jurisprudence at the university’s Magdalen College, turned down the university before it could offer her a place or reject her.
Nowell imitated the university’s style of rejection letters by writing that she realised the admissions tutors “may be disappointed by this decision, but you were in competition with many fantastic universities”. She said the university “did not quite meet the standard”.
She told the BBC the interview had left her feeling like “the only atheist in a gigantic monastery”. Nowell hopes to study at University College London.
Indeed a gutsy student to even think and then implement it in an interesting way. The message is market competition in the higher education is a two way street and that the TINA-there is no alternative-basically hegemony template is most vulnerable.
