It is often cited as a cause of road accidents but now the humble cell phone will help stem Kenya’s rising death toll from motorbike accidents. A campaign by Kenyan NGO El-Friezo this month will try an interactive phone app targeted at the growing number of motorbike use.

The app has been designed as a series of games and interactive tutorials teaching basic road safety as well as safer driving tips and first aid skills. El-Friezo is partnering with Kenyan AirTel, which will provide Android phones to participants to test the app.

In recent years, motorcycle use in Kenya has grown tremendously since the government abolished import tax on motorbikes.
