Power plant with zero emission

Jharkhand may get a coal-fired power plant with zero carbon emission in a few years. A private company in Delhi, Urja Global Limited (ugl), has offered to set up a 100 MW power plant that would sequester carbon dioxide and other pollutants emitted by burning coal. “We’ll import the technology from a US company that holds its patent,” said Aditya Venkatesh, executive director of ugl. A 50-MW plant that uses the technology—electro-catalytic oxidation (eco)—is operating in the US state of Ohio since 2004, he added. The company said it will use integrated eco technology that treats carbon and sulphur emissions separately. UGL said it has bought land in Jamtara district and has assured source of coal. Venkatesh said the detailed project report would be submitted soon. Staff in the office of the state energy secretary said they would consider the proposal after they receive the report. Daljit Singh of Pune non-profit Prayas Energy Group said the “technology is unproven and carries safety concerns” as it is not widely used and storing compressed carbon underground can be risky.
