A chip to block

Apr 15, 2010 | From the print edition

imageProud of their self-styled image as a nation of doglovers, people in the UK are chewing over a government proposal to insert a micro - chip in every canine in the country.

Six million dogs would be tagged as part of a planned crackdown against those who use dangerous animals to intimidate others.

But in a country where backlash is growing against the perceived growth of a nanny state—it has the world’s largest (per capita) police DNA database—rightwing politicians and many in the media claimed the plan would penalize lawabiding families and create a bureaucracy of enforcement officers, scanners and dealers of seized animals.
