Raman Sukumar, founder-director of the Bangalore-based Asian Elephant Research and Conservation Centre, has been selected for the prestigious Whitley Golden Award, popularly known as the 'Green Oscar', for his efforts to save endangered Asian elephants. Sukumar received the trophy as well as a cash prize of about us $80,000 at the Royal Geographical Society in London. He plans to use the funds to rehabilitate farmers impacted by the depredations of elephants, and to rein in poachers.
