A recent announcement by Union minister for water resources Arjun Charan Sethi shows that although India's mega river interlinking project is at a nascent stage, it is already in choppy waters. Sethi revealed that the river networking task force would try to evolve a consensus among states on solutions to problems that are likely to crop up in drought and flood-prone areas. Significantly, many states have rejected the respective proposals put forward to them.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vikram Mahajan said that when the party was in power, it had rejected the same scheme apprehending large-scale displacement of people.
