Global sea levels could rise by eight inches till the end of this century -- a rise much more than what was predicted in 2001 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These were the findings of a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Colorado, USA. According to them, the projected sea level rise is due to a revised estimate of the volume of ice melting from glaciers. They predict that, on an average, glacier melting has contributed about 0.14 millimetres per year to the rising sea levels. But IPCC had estimated this contribution to be only 0.3 millimetres per year (www.lycos.com , February 24, 2002).
