Sri Lanka's power and energy ministry is moving towards tapping new alternative energy sources to meet the galloping electricity demand in the country. Recently, the ministry announced an ambitious plan to harness 'dendro power' -- electricity generated from fuelwood -- by using over 203 hectares of degraded land in the dry zone of the country. It expects to promote 15 'dendro power' plants with a total capacity of 7.5 megawatts with the cultivation of 3,000 hectares of fuelwood plantations.
