Library>> History • Aurangabad An 18th century library in Aurangabad that shut down in 1970 has thrown its doors open to the public.
Once reputed to be one of the biggest libraries in Asia, it had more than 100,000 books and manuscripts in the 1950s. It is situated adjacent to another historic monument, a water mill.
Historians believe Hazrat Babashah Musafir who migrated to Aurangabad in 18th century from Bukhara in modern day Uzbekistan founded the library as well as the water mill. The library’s current collection has dwindled to a modest 3,500 books.
Nevertheless they still cover diverse fields such as history, law, medicine, religion and philosophy. It has rare manuscripts like a commentary on the Quran by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The library’s current head Hafiz Abdul Jaleel said the repository was restarted with the efforts of the Maharashtra Wakf Board.
