India's achievements, failures and opportunities in sustainable development: this is what the twelve chapters of this book deal with. You may agree or disagree with the various assessments and proposals contained in it. However, the book is a must-read as it helps you hear the voice of a team of experts made from LEAD's India network. Their analyses are comprehensive and clear and suggestions pragmatic and novel. In the last ten years, agrarian women have become poorer while environmental degradation has increased. Globalisation has taken a toll on the poor. The book also talks about the traditional and indigenous knowledge and whether intellectual property rights are able to protect these. Science and technology should assist in achieving sustainablity, the book suggests. It is full of micro success and macro failures. The writers argue that the way forward is to build a "coalition for responsible frugality".
