The use of compressed natural gas (cng) has been made compulsory for new buses and taxis in some parts of Indonesia. This has been done to bring down pollution levels, said an official of the country's energy ministry.
" cng is a cleaner alternative to the polluting diesel," said the official. The capital, Jakarta, and the neighbouring cities will be initially targeted under the programme. For now, buses and taxis already running on diesel and petrol will not be forced to use cng , the official added. Jakarta is one of the world's most polluted cities. People there are forced to commute on poorly maintained, polluting buses.
