Students of the Pirang Lower Basic School in Gambia have started a campaign to rid their neighbourhood of used batteries. After being taught about the health and environmental hazards posed by these batteries, the children have started collecting them on weekends.
Till now, over 20,000 used batteries have been collected and dumped in two cement-lined pits. "By teaching the students about the health hazards associated with used batteries we are hoping that they inspire the rest of the community," said the teachers of Pirang.
