Efficient act

the Energy Conservation Act 2001 has recently come into force. The act confers upon the Union and state governments, power to enforce measures for efficient use of energy and its conservation.

It aims to establish a statutory authority called the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, which will prescribe guidelines for energy conservation and disseminate information about the efficient use of energy. "The bureau will recommend energy consumption standards for equipment and appliances, which are right now not in place. For example, refrigerators and other energy consuming appliances would now have labels about their energy consumption level. The labels would also display energy efficiency of the products with a star mark," said Sri Ramasamy, energy economist at the Energy Management Centre of the Union ministry of power. According to him, the average national energy loss of 21 per cent can be prevented by stringently implementing the act.
