RECYCLING of plastic waste is crucial for efficient management of environment. Recognising this, Plastindia, an organisation of the plastic manufacturers in India has decided to fund the setting up of a Indian Centre for Plastic Environment (ICPE) in Hyderabad. The centre will develop new technologies for recycling plastic waste and improving waste management techniques.

The governing council of the center will comprise specialists from the industry and officials from the environment ministry. According to chairperson of Plastindia Vijay Merchant, the center will also build a database and national information system on plastic waste in the country.

Merchant said the centre will also conduct educational and awareness programme regarding plastic waste management. Merchant said that it has been decided that the minimum gauge of the polythene bags would be 20 microns and above and those made out of plastic waste will be a minimum of 25 microns.
