Apr 30, 1999 | From the print edition

The Delhi High Court ordered the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to submit a status report of its progress on pollution control measures in the river Yamuna. The government had allocated Rs 479.56 crore for the Yamuna Action Plan meant to clean the river. The court also asked the Haryana government to file a detailed affidavit about the steps taken against industrial units discharging wastes in the river. The order was in reponse to a Public Interest Litigation seeking strictures on the Union government, and Delhi and Haryana governments to take steps to control the level of pollution in the Yamuna.
