The Supreme Court restrained all the state government's and their "functionaries" from allowing felling of trees in the reserved forests, even if they are diseased. The order came in the wake of a report about the state of forests in different parts of the country that showed an alarming picture. The Court had earlier allowed felling of diseased trees in a public interest petition. In the name of felling diseased trees, perfectly healthy ones were also being cut down. The Supreme Court-appointed senior counsel Harish Salve submitted before the judges that this felling was done in connivance with government officials.
