Sweet but guilty

A survey on artificially-sweetened
products found that some firms in the
UK were ignoring legal requirements -
that is to state, "with sweeteners" - on
the packaging of the product. The survey was conducted by the Food
Commission, a body incharge of quality
control of food items in the UK. "While
we found some companies hide the
information in small print against the
spirit of the law, we actually found that
several companies ignored the law completely," said Tim Lobstein, co-director
of the Food Commission.

It is compulsory for the manufacturers to clearly mention that sweeteners
have been added to the product under
the Sweeteners in Food Regulations,
which became a law in 1997. All the
products in the survey had been put on
the market after that date.
