The Gujarat High Court recently cracked the whip on two major industries for causing pollution. In two separate orders, the court ordered the corporate giant, Reliance Industries, and Maradia Chemicals to compensate affected villagers. Reliance was ordered to pay Rs 70 lakh to the people of 20 villages located along the Kharicut canal by February 1997. Effluents released by the industry into the canal had affected the agricultural land of the villagers.
Maradia Chemicals was asked to pay Rs 2.36 crore to the people of Sorimbada village in Surendra-nagar district for causing large-scale pollution. The court also appointed a committee to study all aspects of environment, pollution control, people's grievances, cattle health and drinking water in Sorimbada and suggest remedial measures.
