According to a study conducted by Lazzlo Bito of the Columbia University, New York, the colour of the human eye changes during adult life. His study was based on 187 pairs of twins born in 1957 in Kentucky, USA. Eye colour was recorded at the age of six and then in adulthood. The colour changed by 16.6 per cent. Darkening and lightening were found to be equally common. Eye colour is determined by genetic factors that control the concentration of melanin, the pigment that also decides the colour of the skin and hair ( Archives of Ophthalmology , Vol 115, No 5).
