The government will invest us $100 million for the growth and diversification of marine life during the next four years. The decision has come at a time when conservationists had been sounding the alarm about the endangered species. According to them, endangered dolphins were swallowing nearly 300,000 bacteria a day in North Landau's sewage-laden waters, exposing them to disease and death.
Maria Kwan Sik-ning, acting secretary for economic services, says that about 150 man-made reefs would be dropped into the sea to provide food and protection for fish. The first reef is expected to be placed by the end of 1997.
About 246 Chinese White Dolphins are threatened by pollution and disturbances from shipping. According to reports, the death of dolphins in the region has occurred due to intake of sewage bacteria that lead to various diseases such as gastroenteritis, cholera and typhoid.
