Engines that use hydrogen as fuel
are environmentally the most suitable, but a sufficient supply of fuel is
the only impediment to the mass
production of such engines. Metal-
lurgical engineers from the Baikov
Institute of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, Baikov have now found a
way out. An alloy of lantan and
nickel that they have developed has
the amazing property of absorbing,
retaining and transmuting hydrogen at as low a temperature as
150C. The volume of hydrogen
absorbed is almost 1,000 times more
than the volume of the alloy itse'f
and the alloy retains its initial efficiency of accumulation and absorption even after multiple uses.
