With a view to improving the awareness of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) among customers, the Austrian Association of Electric Utilities and CFL manufacturers have jointly launched a 'hands-on' information programme. The utilities and lighting industry have prepared a lamp-box that is lent free to customers who can test commercially available cfl s at home for a couple of days. Each box contains eight cfl s, ranging from nine to 24 watts. The programme aims at motivating consumers to compare the quality of light given off by cfl s with that of incandescent lamps; to see whether cfl s -- which differ in shape from incandescents -- fit their lamp sockets ( International Association for Energy Efficient Lighting Newsletter , Stockholm, Vol 4, No 12).
