The UK-based Waste Gas Technology has developed the Thermo-Crack System -- a new technique for turning waste into electricity. The system is supposed to be twice as efficient as a conventional incinerator. The technique involves subjecting the waste to high temperatures of upto 1,000C in an oxygen-free atmosphere. The consequent conversion of waste into gas rather than liquid, accords the new technique a greater efficiency. The gas produced is said to be ideal for use in gas turbines and engines, providing around 70-110 per cent of the heating value of natural gas.
