There is reason for hope for fair skin individuals worrying about UV radiations triggering sporadic basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. Researchers at the Stanford University, Palo Alto and the University of California, both in the US have identified mutations in the patched gene as a causative factor in this type of skin cancer. About 750,000 new cases of this type of skin cancer are reported in the US every year. Therefore, the development of a therapeutic cure based on this finding, rather than depending completely on surgery would be in strong demand.
