Users of digital mobile phones may soon be able to send faxes directly from their handsets. Vodafone of the UK is carrying out trials of a service that would allow its subscribers to use the short message service facility to compose faxes. The message can be up to 160 characters-long and is relayed to its destination via a call centre that converts the information into a conventional fax message. A short trial of the system has given successful results.
