HE green bug has finally bitten the
Supreme Court. In a recent statement
on March 30, Chief Justice A M Ahmadi
declared that all official cars belonging
to the court would soon run on compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of
petrol or diesel.
Natural gas is a gaseous hydrocarbon fuel composed of methane, ethane,
propane and butane. In its compressed form it is called CNG. Automobiles using CNG emit comparatively
less carbon monoxide than petrolpowered vehicles.
The 1,281 cars of various departments of the Central government will
also switch to CNG. The Gas Authority
of India will Supply CNG from its compressor station at Ghaziabad. While the
device will cost the government over
Rs 30,000 per vehicle, the court is of the
opinion that it is the duty of the government to ensure the "right to life" in a
pollution-free atmosphere.
