The Earthworm Award founded in 1987 and worth 2,000 to the winning author, is the premier prize for books designed to attract children towards environmental concerns. According to Charles Secrett, the director of Friends of the Earth, "It is intended to encourage the writing and publication of books that will raise environmental awareness in the young."
Some of the books that have been shortlisted for this year's award are: The Hunter by Paul Garaghty, The Secret Forests by Michael Gaffney, Times-natch by Robert Swindells, and Fallout by Gudrun Pausewang.
