High court agrees with the Centre
uttarakhand high court vacated its stay on a Central government order suspending work on the 600 MW Loharinag Pala hydel project.
The Centre had suspended work on the project on February 19 after environmentalist G D Agarwal went on an indefinite hunger strike in protest against hydel projects on the Ganga. On February 26, the court stayed Centre's order following a petition filed by a non-profit that argued halting work on the project would affect people's livelihood. In the latest verdict on May 18, the court dismissed the case and said the Ganga River Basin Authority should decide whether the project ought to continue or not. Work on the project, however, continues despite the orders.
