The Supreme Court has given the go-ahead for the Commonwealth Games Village on the Yamuna river bank. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan set aside a 2008 Delhi High Court judgement directing the setting up of a committee to monitor the environmental impact of the project.

The apex court, in its July 30 judgement, said the high court had disregarded scientific literature and expert opinion which held that the Commonwealth Games Village site was not on the floodplain. "But anyone can see the construction site is in the floodplain," pointed out Manoj Misra of the Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan, the petitioner. The Yamuna floodplain is the most important groundwater recharge point and the buildings will hinder groundwater recharge, he said.
