The Venezuelan president, Hugo Chvez, has ordered a halt to exports of asphalt, saying it is needed domestically to repair roads.
While talking at a presidential television broadcast on January 13, Chvez said: "In the biggest us cities, there are highways completely paved with our asphalt...why do we have to export asphalt if our highways don't work?" Venezuela produces 27,000 barrels of asphalt per day and exports 63 per cent of it. The us is the biggest consumer of Venezuelan asphalt. Chvez also suggested creating a state company to nationalize asphalt production.
