Gray wolf: Off the endangered< (Credit: FWS)Acoalition of conservationist groups is planning to sue the us government in an attempt to reverse a February 21 decision to remove the gray wolf in the northern Rocky Mountains from the endangered species list.
Following 13 years of restoration efforts, the population of largely exterminated animal has soared to an estimated 1,500. The federal government now plans to hand the wolf management duties over to the Rocky Mountain states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. But conservationists say their number is too less to ensure the species survival. The states have pledged to protect the animal, but at the same time, have plans to sponsor wolf hunts to reduce conflicts with livestock and as part of big game, which will kill hundreds of them in a few months, the conservationist groups fear.
