emerging catastrophe: Climate change is emerging as the latest threat to the world's fast-declining fish stocks, says a new report by UNEP. The report, In Dead Water, says climate change may slow down the global flow of ocean currents, which flush and clean continental shelves and are critical for maintaining water quality, nutrient distribution and life-cycle patterns of fish and other marine life in the fishing grounds. In developed countries, the degradation of traditional fishing grounds will affect the fishing industry, says the report. The effects will, however, be more direct in developing countries and small island countries, where millions of coastal communities depend on marine resources for their sustenance and livelihoods.
